Let’s continue with the current favorite song shall we?.. this time with Ugly Kid Joe’s Utube video..
Qoutes the lyrics from the song..
My child arrived just the other day;
Came to the world in the usually way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
He was talkin’ ‘fore I knew it.
And as he grew he said,
“I’m gonna be like you, Dad.
You know I’m gonna be like you.”
Ah the joy of being a father… and the main character of the song missed the birth of his son, including the first steps! Who would want to miss that?!
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man on the moon.
“When you comin’ home ?”
“Son, I don’t know when.
We’ll get together then.
You know we’ll have a good time then.”
This is the part of the song where the father and son talked and that they will soon get together when there’s free time (the father) which there will never be.. always busy apparently.
Well, my son turned ten just the other day.
He said , “Thanks for the ball, Dad. Come on, let’s play.
Could you teach me to throw ?” I said, “Not today.
I got a lot to do.” He said, “That’s okay.”
And he walked away and he smiled and he said,
“You know,
I’m gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I’m gonna be like him.”
Another scene from the father and son moment where in the baby is now a young child. Asking to play with his Dad, the dad is still too busy to spend some quality time with his boy. And the boy, being innocent as he is, still idolized his dad.
Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
“I’m proud of you. Could you sit for a while ?”
He shook his head and he said with a smile,
“What I’d really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please ?”
The boy has become a young man. The father here starts to ‘bond’ with his son… a little late but still he tried. But his son but this time has his friends where he probably confides with coz he has no father to watch over him while he was growing up. Well he has a father but with all the stuff going on, no time for him.
I’ve long since retired, my son’s moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
“I’d like to see you, if you dont mind.”
He said, “I’d love to, Dad, if I could find the time.
You see my new job’s a hassle and the kids have the flu,
But it’s sure nice talkin’ to you, Dad.
It’s been sure nice talkin’ to you.”
Though the song is upbeat and sounds so happy, the song is actually a very sad one. It still makes me sad when it reaches this part of the song… The father is now old and is missing his son… But now the son is busy with his own family that he has no time for his own son, let along his Dad.
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me,
He’d grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
And so the song ends. Sad.
